Germany hit by riots and looting after cost of living protests turn violent

Demonstrations organised by the campaign group Gen Z regelt drew thousands across Germany before violence and looting broke out in Frankfurt, Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg, leaving more than 100 police officers injured.

BBC World
Rioters looted shops in central Frankfurt late on Saturday as clashes erupted in German cities over the cost of living. The rallies were organised by the campaign group Gen Z regelt, whose name translates from German as "Gen Z takes charge". Thousands of people had taken part in the largely peaceful demonstrations across Germany before violence broke out. At least 54 people were arrested in Frankfurt and more than 100 police officers were left injured, according to German authorities. Frankfurt, Germany's financial hub, saw some of the worst disorder, but there were also outbreaks of violence in Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg. The unrest comes as protests have been taking place across Europe over the rising cost of living, poor public services and a lack of affordable housing. The BBC's world correspondent Joe Inwood reported on the events.
