Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has placed his cabinet ministers and other senior government officials through military training. The Prime Minister stated that such military discipline can help cultivate stronger leaders and advance the country's overall development. Photos shared by Abiy on social media show him participating in military exercises alongside ministers, deputy ministers, and heads of government institutions at the Hurso military training centre. This initiative is noted as unusual within Ethiopia, where senior civilian government officials rarely participate in military drills. Among the officials taking part are Muferiat Kamil, Speaker of the House of Federation; Fitsum Assefa, Finance Minister; and Mekdes Daba, Health Minister. While the exact start date and expected duration of the training remain unclear, Abiy emphasized that Ethiopia's goal of achieving universal prosperity requires its leadership to be physically fit, morally strong, and intellectually capable. He argued that military institutions offer valuable lessons in discipline, patriotism, teamwork, accountability, and leadership. Abiy noted that soldiers operate with targets while civilians have goals, asserting that the objective of both is victory. He contended that combining military and civilian disciplines would help create a generation capable of achieving common objectives and developing leaders with a strong sense of purpose and responsibility. This training occurs against a backdrop of significant security concerns. Ethiopia is currently facing continued fighting in parts of the northern Tigray region, as well as conflict in Amhara and insecurity within Oromia. Furthermore, the exercises take place amid heightened tensions with neighboring Eritrea, raising concerns about the potential for renewed conflict between the two nations. Abiy has previously stressed the importance of military preparedness and national development as core components of his government's ambitions.
